天快亮時，副警長法蘭斯布蘭奇佩獨自上路，他去找他兩年沒見的好朋友，同時也是法官的吉歐馬斯托布羅。他大老遠開兩小時的車找他，單純只為了說幾句話。問一個問題，找一個答案。同一天早上，法官的屍體被人發現，他的額頭中了一槍。法蘭斯是最後一個見到吉歐的人，死者家中也只找得到他的指紋，只有他能在那段時間犯案。檢察官拘捕了法蘭斯，他太了解他，熟知他的過去、他有過的女人、他的壞習慣及其他缺點。法蘭斯不斷回想自己的過去，他迫切想找出真兇，找出一切事情的真相。
